Ponds of Death

The battle of Messines (Belgium-Flanders Fields) was launched on 7 June 1917 with the detonation of 19 underground mines underneath the German mines. Today, the then formed huge craters appear at first sight lovely pools full of life, where birds and other animals like to linger around on hot summer days. Once they were hell, death, and for many still the grave of thousands of soldiers.
